Term Description
DISCOM Short for Distribution Company. DISCOM is your electricity provider, also commonly known as Utility Provider.
Photovoltaic (PV) System A system that converts sunlight into electricity using solar panels.
Photovoltaic Cell (PV Cell) The basic unit of a solar panel that converts sunlight into electricity.
Balance of System (BoS) All components of a solar PV system, excluding solar panels, such as mounting structure, inverter, battery, DCDB, ACDB, earthing, lightning arrestor (LA) etc.
Inverter A device that converts DC electricity produced by solar panels into AC electricity, that can be either used by AC loads or fed into the grid.
MPPT Maximum Power Point Tracking: A mechanism that allows the inverter to maximize power output from solar energy.
Net Meter & Gross Meter Net meter tracks the net energy used, and adjusts consumed units against exported ones, reducing the bill. In gross metering, the consumer is compensated with a fixed tariff for generated units.
On-Grid or Grid-tied An on-grid or grid-tied system is connected to the utility grid, providing the benefit of Net-Metering.
Off-Grid System A standalone solar PV system not connected to the electrical grid, used in places having frequent power outage or need for a standalone system or remote.
Circuit Breaker Protects your system from faults, fires, and damage.
ACDB and DCDB ACDB (AC distribution box) protects the system in case of load side failure, while DCDB (DC distribution box) protects against faults on the DC side.
